Open Eduvisit: Practical Insight into the Finnish Education System

The program of this educational visit contains opportunities to meet with Finnish education experts, authorities, and local schools. You will learn about Finland's Education framework and will have an opportunity to observe how the educational theory works in practice in Finnish classroom within the Helsinki Metropolitan area.

The aim of the visit is to explore the Finnish educational system, teacher education system, and the evaluation of education. Participants will also learn about Finnish educational philosophy and methodological practices in the education of primary and lower and upper secondary schools as well as in early childhood education. The teaching days will be carried out as lectures, discussions, and school visits.

TARGET GROUP

Teachers, principals, administrators, students and all others interested in learning about the Finnish educational system. The visit is open for individual visitors.

The visit will be hosted by a staff member of University of Helsinki Centre for Continuing Education HY+ Ltd.

CONTENT

Exclusive visit to the University of Helsinki’s renowned teacher training school
Gain an insight of the Finnish education transformation by meeting with the experts of Finnish Teacher Education. You will have an opportunity to learn from the Finnish Teacher education and exchange ideas with the leading experts of learning and education in Finland.
 
Visit to a public school in the Helsinki Metropolitan area
Deepen your insight of the Finnish educational world by visiting two schools in the cities of Helsinki, Espoo and/or Vantaa. You will be welcomed to observe lessons and interact with principals, teachers, and pupils. Experience the daily life of the Finnish schools!
 
Visit to the Finnish National Agency for Education
Meet with the experts and learn more about the educational system in Finland, current policy issues, and continuous development of education.

Presentations by lecturers from the University of Helsinki Faculty of Educational Sciences
Hear about the latest research and best practices in the field of education and teacher training and meet with experts in Finnish education. 

PRICE 

The total price 1300 € (VAT is not charged) includes fees for lecturers, visits to schools and other organizations, lunches, local transportation in Finland, and one dinner during the visit.

PLEASE NOTE

The confirmation of the acceptance will be sent shortly after the final registration date. 

The price does not include accommodation, airport transportation or flights. You can book any hotel in Helsinki; however, all the transportations during the Eduvisit program will be arranged to and from the Senate Square in central Helsinki.

Final registration date is September 18th 2022. 

The organizer reserves the right to cancel the Open Eduvisit in case of an insufficient number of participants. In this case, the participation fee will be fully refunded.

9 a.m. – 10 a.m. Welcoming words and an introduction to the University of Helsinki Centre for Continuing Education HY+

10 a.m.-12 p.m. Presentation on the Finnish Educational System and Teacher Education in Finland 
Lecturer from the University of Helsinki, the Department of Teacher Education

12 p.m. – 1.15 Lunch

1.30 p.m. – 3.30 p.m. Visit to Finnish National Agency for Education and Presentation on Finnish Curriculum and Assessment and Evaluation 
Presentation of the Finnish educational system and current policy issues (e.g. the new national curriculum and development of the educational system).

Pre-arranged dinner 

Wednesday, November 2nd 

9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Visit to a comprehensive school in the Helsinki Metropolitan area
Presentation of a school including class room observation, and shadowing of the teachers followed by discussions. School lunch included.

1 p.m. – 2 p.m. Presentation on Early Childhood Education in Finland
Lecturer from the University of Helsinki Faculty of Educational Sciences

2.15 p.m. – 3.30 p.m. Presentation on Student-Centered Learning Methods 
Lecturer from the University of Helsinki Faculty of Educational Sciences

Thursday, November 3rd

9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Visit to the University of Helsinki Viikki Teacher Training School (grades 1–12)
Presentation of the school and teacher training methods, presentation on a specific module, classroom observation followed by discussions. School lunch included.

2 p.m. – 3 p.m. Reflection and discussion on the school visits
Led by an expert from the University of Helsinki Centre for Continuing Education HY+.

3 p.m. – 4 p.m. Presentation on Special Education
Lecturer from the University of Helsinki Faculty of Educational Sciences

Friday, November 4th 

9 a.m.-10 a.m. Presentation on teachers’ in-service training in Finland
Expert from University of Helsinki Centre for Continuing Education HY+
10 a.m. – 11.15 a.m. Closing ceremony: Reflection and discussion, Presentation of the certificates and the of the academic programme

11.30 a.m. – 12.45 p.m. Lunch

1 p.m. onwards Voluntary activity – two alternatives for the afternoon:

1)    Tour of University of Helsinki City Centre Campus and Oodi Library 
The multidisciplinary City Centre Campus in the very heart of Helsinki is the largest campus of the University of Helsinki with its approx. 17 000 students. The City Centre Campus houses the Faculty of Educational Sciences, the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Theology, the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Social Sciences as well as the Swedish School of Social Science.

Helsinki Central Library Oodi is a living meeting place at Kansalaistori square, right at the heart of Helsinki. The library building consists almost entirely of public space and offers a wide selection of services. Oodi is a venue for events, a house of reading and a diverse urban experience.

2)    Visit to Helsinki City Museum and Children’s town exhibition
In Children’s Town, Helsinki’s past is illustrated by means of play and joint activities. In Children’s Town, visitors can learn more about Helsinki’s history through own experiences and joint activities.
